BOP Expand Home Confinement: What You Need To Know

Updated: Jun 15

We posted about this in our Discord 5 days ago... We got word from inmates that people were getting screened to go home from LOW security Federal Prison!

The Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) is making a long-overdue shift—one that could have a major impact on families with incarcerated loved ones in the Feds. It will also help new federal inmates

In a recent announcement, the BOP revealed its plans to expand the use of home confinement, moving away from an over-reliance on halfway houses. This decision is intended to ease overcrowding, focus limited resources where they’re most needed, and, most importantly, help individuals return home more efficiently thanks to the First Step Act.

This change opens new doors for many incarcerated people nearing the end of their federal sentence - and gives families hope for earlier reunification like the 100 Cases recommended for Clemency

Key Highlights

Expansion of Home Confinement

The BOP will increase the number of inmates eligible for home confinement, especially those who don’t require the services of halfway houses (also known as Residential Reentry Centers or RRCs).

Better Use of Resources

Home confinement allows RRCs to focus their limited services on individuals with greater reintegration needs, like housing, job placement, or substance abuse counseling.

Eligibility Focus

The program targets inmates who:

Have demonstrated consistent good behavior

Have a stable home environment

Are within the final months of their sentence

Support for Families

Bringing people home earlier means more time with loved ones, stronger emotional bonds, and better long-term outcomes post-incarceration. That's why we continue to update our support group with News like this.

What This Means for You and Your Loved Ones

If your family member is in federal prison and nearing the end of their sentence, now is the time to get informed and proactive. This expansion could mean they come home sooner—but preparation is key.

For Families:

Understand the eligibility requirements and begin building a strong home plan now. This includes a safe living space, community ties, and potential job opportunities.

For Inmates:

Staying out of trouble, completing programs, and showing responsibility can improve chances for transfer to home confinement.

For Advocates and Supporters:
